Replay in Neon - Fevered Sleep
Prepare to take a thought-deflecting journey through the curious sounds of Replay in Neon - a music project closely linked to my music making of the mid-1980s. Back then, armed with an MSX computer, no music training and a trusty Casio VL-Tone keyboard, I mashed together a chaos of disjointed surprising buzzes, blerps, snatched snippets of noise pirated from elusive shortwave radio stations, and rinky dink electronics, as if idly borrowed from the grainy footage of a half remembered Children's Film Foundation production.
Now, nearly 40 years into the future, Replay in Neon continues the experimental spirit of those early days, as fragments of those building blocks twist through the compositions. These progressive crunchy electronic instrumentals are like a box of musical odd bits, shifting between dreamlike tranquil ambience and the chaos you get when rudely awoken by an alarm during your favourite happy dream. Ethereal and haunting melodies navigate through a tempestuous sea of sonic frenzy and dissonance, as if Vangelis and Jean Michel Jarre are politely attempting to squeeze their way through the crowd to the front of an ear squelching electroclash gig in the local village hall, as Kraftwerk dressed in clown costumes serve at the bar from the back of the room.
So much crunch... so much glitch... so much ethereal... all squeezed from one tiny music tool, the handheld Caustic music app. A restriction I use to avoid squandering hours on the treacherous and eternal path of synth-tweaking. That's a fate a fate best left to the synth sorcerers seeking audio alchemy. I am happy to do the odd synth card trick instead for you in the style of Paul Daniels.
So, pick a synth... any synth!
No, don't show it to me!
Let me guess!
Is it this one?
